Slow Checkout Is Killing Your Conversion Rate
Every extra second at checkout costs you sales. Here's what's actually slowing your store down — and the fixes that move the needle most

The moment you lose people
Most stores obsess over the homepage and product pages, then hand checkout off to whatever the platform gives them by default. That's backwards. Checkout is the one page where every visitor has already decided to buy — and it's still where most of them leave.
Industry data consistently puts average cart abandonment above 65%. Some of that is window-shopping. A meaningful chunk of it is friction you control.
## What's actually slowing people down
**Too many steps.** Account creation, shipping, billing, payment, confirmation — each as a separate page — gives people four extra chances to close the tab. Every additional step is a decision point, and decision points are where hesitation creeps in.
**Forced account creation.** Requiring a login before checkout is one of the highest-abandonment triggers we see. Guest checkout with an optional "save your info" prompt afterward converts better almost every time.
**Unclear shipping costs.** If shipping only appears at the final step, you've just changed the price on someone who already committed to a number in their head. Show it early — on the product page or cart, not as a surprise.
**Slow page loads on mobile.** Checkout pages are often the heaviest on a site because of payment scripts, trust badges, and third-party widgets. A checkout that takes three seconds to load loses people who'd already made up their mind.
## What we actually fix first
1. **Collapse it to one page.** Shipping, billing, and payment on a single scrollable screen, not a multi-step wizard.
2. **Guest checkout by default.** Account creation becomes an option after purchase, not a gate before it.
3. **Autofill and address validation.** Fewer keystrokes, fewer typos, fewer failed submissions.
4. **Real payment diversity.** Card, and at least one wallet option (Apple Pay / Google Pay) — one-tap payment removes almost the entire form.
5. **Progress transparency.** If it must be multi-step, show exactly where the customer is and how many steps remain.
## The part people skip
None of this matters if you don't measure it. Set up funnel tracking that shows exactly which checkout step people abandon on. A vague "checkout has a 70% abandonment rate" tells you nothing. "42% of abandonment happens at the shipping-cost reveal" tells you exactly what to fix first.
Checkout isn't the boring part of your store — it's the part with the highest ROI per hour of work, because you're not trying to attract more traffic. You're just trying to stop losing the traffic you already convinced.
